EMERGENCY
Communication Center Training
At Muskogee County EMS our dispatchers go through a 3 to 4 month new hire orientation before being released to work without a Certified Training Officer (CTO). They spend time in a classroom setting as well as hands-on training on the dispatch floor. They will be trained in BLS (Basic Life Support) by our in-house American Heart Association Instructor.
During their training period, they will attend a 3-day Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) course. This course is provided by Priority Dispatch of Salt Lake City, Utah. Muskogee County EMS is proud to have our very own Certified EMD Instructor, which allows us to host courses in Muskogee as needed.
Priority Dispatch offers other courses throughout the United States.
The Muskogee County EMS Communications Center is fully accredited by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) as a “Center of Excellence.”
Our communications personnel are certified Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD’s) and may also have backgrounds as Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Registered Nurses and/or Emergency Medical Responders (EMR’s).
The Communications Center utilizes a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. When an emergency call comes in, a certified dispatcher takes the call and provides pre-arrival instructions to the caller in order to care for the patient before the ambulance arrives. At the same time, a second dispatcher is notifying the Paramedics and EMT’s of the call and providing directions to the patient’s location.
Other job duties of the Communications Center staff consists of answering and relaying radio traffic, arranging non-emergency transfers, and coordinating efforts between multiple agencies in a variety of emergency situations. There are not many careers that are as demanding, yet fulfilling, as that of the Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
