EMERGENCY
Types of Transport
Primarily an emergency medical service, Muskogee County EMS has evolved to meet the needs of our community. We provide specialty services to our community through Critical Care inter-facility transports, Basic and Advanced Life Support transports, long distance transfers, the Disaster Medical Response Team, monthly CPR training that is open to the public, Fall Prevention Program and Special Event coverage.
Whether it is an emergency call, a local transfer, or a long-distance transfer anywhere in Oklahoma or the surrounding states, our professional and highly skilled medics are trained to handle all types of patient needs.
Muskogee County EMS is an area leader in ventilator-support transportation. With our advanced portable ventilators, our paramedics can match the patient’s physician-prescribed settings to provide a continuum of care and allow the patient to better tolerate transport.
Our crews also have IV pumps and can manage multiple intravenous fluids. Paramedics are the highest trained pre-hospital care providers and are skilled in advanced airway management, IV therapy, ECG and 12 lead monitoring, cardiac defibrillation/pacing, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), medication administration and monitoring, and other specialized procedures.
Muskogee County EMS is dedicated to providing consistent, compassionate, and clinically excellent service to our patients, customers, and communities.
For non-emergency service, local or long distance transfers, or for questions or other information, please call our non-emergency number at 918-683-0108.
Non-Emergency Medical Transportation
Some of our patients require ambulance transportation for medically necessary reasons but on a non-emergency basis . Examples include pre-scheduled transfers between hospitals, other healthcare or treatment facilities, or between patient’s homes and hospitals.
Demand for non-emergency medical transportation ambulance services has increased with the growing number of specialized treatment and out-patient facilities, nursing homes and home health care agencies.
Basic Life Support
Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances provide transport to patients who do not require extra support or cardiac monitoring. A BLS ambulance is staffed by two medics with training in basic emergency medical care such as basic airway management, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and basic drug administration. Examples of BLS transports include:
- Hospital discharges
- Psychiatric discharges
- Basic Life support emergencies
- Interfacility transfers
- Transport to dialysis
- Doctor’s offices
Advanced Life Support
-
Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances transport patients who need a higher level of care during transport above those services provided by a BLS ambulance. The unit is staffed by an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or Paramedic who is qualified to render advanced life support to patients such as advanced airway management, drug administration and cardiac monitoring. Patients who typically require ALS transport include:
- Medical/surgical patients with a continuous IV
- Patients on a cardiac monitor
- Patients with potential airway compromise
- Any patient deemed to have a potential complication during transport when reported by the sending facility
- Life threatening medical emergencies (For example: respiratory distress, stroke, seizure, chest pains)
Specialty Care Transport
Specialty Care Transport (SCT) is the interfacility transportation of critically injured or ill patients by paramedics who have additional training beyond the standard paramedic scope of practice. Patients who may require SCT include:
- Ventilator transports
- Expanded scope drug administration via IV pump
Special Events Ambulance
Muskogee County EMS provides ambulance and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) coverage for your special event. Planning a special event requires thinking about all the details including emergency care. Let Muskogee County EMS take care of your EMS care concerns by stationing our vehicles and medics at your event. Examples include: sporting events, community festivals, ceremonies and gatherings, public relations and promotional events, concerts, public and private events, races, rodeos, church events and more.
In all situations, if a patient is transported and/or treated, normal ambulance billing policies and charges will apply and will be billed to the patient (or responsible party) receiving the medical services. In all situations, if the event continues in the absence of an ambulance, the event sponsor does so at its own risk.
Stand-by Ambulance only – This ambulance is generally regularly scheduled on-duty staff, subject to other ambulance calls, and is not guaranteed to actually be available at the special event. Even if the ambulance is available at the event, the ambulance may leave the event at any time needed for other EMS business.
Reserved Ambulance – This ambulance is reserved for the special event for a fee. If the ambulance leaves the event transporting a patient, MCEMS will attempt to send a second ambulance to continue coverage at the event, although this is not guaranteed and depends on ambulance availability. (Only in rare situations would the reserved ambulance leave on a different ambulance call not associated with the special event, e.g. situations including but not limited to those required by Health Dept. regulations, or other emergency situations.)
